Born on 12 November 1978 in Bucharest, Romania, Alexandra Maria Lara fled to Germany with her parents when she was four and half years old. After graduating at a French High School in Berlin, she studied acting at the Theaterwerkstatt Charlottenburg from 1997 and 2000, but had already played leading characters in several TV shows and movies.

She was first offered film parts when still at school, playing the lead in the ZDF family series Mensch at the age of 16. She has since built up an impressive list of credits in film and television productions ranging from the Roland Suso Richter TV two-parters Die Bubi Scholz Story and Der Tunnel through Mark Schlichter's TV movie Liebe und Verrat to such feature films as Jochen Kuhn's Fisimatenten, Thomas Bahmann's Suedsee, eigene Insel, Joseph Vilsmaier's Leo & Claire, Doris Doerrie's Nackt and Mark Schlichter's Cowgirl. She became more widely known outside of Germany after appearing as Duchess Maria Waleska, opposite Christian Clavier, Gˇrard Depardieu and Isabella Rossellini, in the international television mini-series Napolˇon and took one of the leads in a new version of Doctor Zhivago with Sam Neill and Keira Knightley.

She then played the role of Adolf Hitler's secretary Traudl Junge in Oliver Hirschbiegl's OSCAR-nominated Der Untergang (Downfall).   Due to her outstanding performance in this film Francis Ford Coppola was prompted to write her a letter and gave her a leading role in Youth Without Youth.  Since then, she has played alongside Moritz Bleibtreu in Helmut Dietl's romantic drama Vom Suchen und Finden der Liebe.  Early this year, Alexandra returned to her native country of Romania to play the female lead in Didi Danquart's melodrama Offset and most recently she has played a starring role in Anton Corbijn’s Control.
